Ethics

The ACM Code of Ethics emphasizes the crucial importance of making sure computer systems created by humans are not liable to harm humans, or make unethical decisions that would negatively impact human life (ACM Code of Ethics 1.1, 1.2). In this situation, the AI being implemented into the Polish justice system are making biased decisions that decide the future of a human life, directly relating it to the ACM Code of Ethics. The ACM Code of Ethics also emphasizes that we must acknowledge all humans as stakeholders in the computing world (ACM Code of Ethics 1.1). Finally, they should be honest and transparent about their policies and procedures (ACM Code of Ethics 1.3). Based on the ACM Code of Ethics, many citizens are being treated unfairly and unjustly by computer generated life.

Another code of ethics relevant to this ethical dilemma question would be the Institute of electrical and electronics engineers (IEEE) Code of Ethics. This is a code of ethics based around engineers, but still touches on the topic of the importance of controlling intelligence systems and privacy matters within. The code of ethics says “to treat all persons fairly and with respect, and to not engage in discrimination based on characteristics such as race, religion, gender, disability, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression”(IEEE, section 7). Many computer science engineers are beginning to discover exactly how much we still do not know about artificial intelligence, and how much power it holds over us. These codes of ethics do not contradict each other, but do correspond in section 1.1 of ACM Code of Ethics and section 7 of IEEE Code of Ethics, relating to the fairness and equality of all human life.
